DJ RAP (text by JP)

The strange thing about DJ Rap is that he's neither ass ugly or a dude. DJ Rap is something as strange as an extremely attractive female who knows how to spin records and punch in drum machine instructions. My first encounter of her work was simply a result of rummaging around in a record store in the Heights, San Francisco, around 2000 or so. Her lyrics, if they where hers, where a little on the hormonal side, but I kept listening to her album for almost two full summer months, simply because my CD player was kind of broken and my bank account kinda empty.

Her latest 2008 compilation is a bit of a let down. She is starting to sound too much like Roni Size. The 2006 album "Up all night" is much more in tune with her earlier work and is basically delicious lightweight drum and base. For some strange reason she is very good at creating a vibe of "this is different somehow" or something like that. Her work is sort of a nice backdrop to a large metropolitan city filled with life and lights. If you live in shitville and never drive around you will probably not get this, though. A little bit of vodka, sitting in a back seat, going somewhere cool. Hoping that the driver stays sober while you smell the city at night. Everything is possible. You feel alive. No more work for at least 36 hours. Hopefully you wake up somewhere nice.
